About ATOM
ATOM (Aluminum Tree & Ornament Museum) got its beginning in 1991. Steven Jackson, a local home designer, was given a tattered aluminum Christmas tree, as a joke, that a friend found in the garbage. Remembering the silver tree in his childhood home, Jackson threw a party and invited guests to bring the "most aesthetically challenged" ornaments they could find. It turned out to be a big hit. A few years later, someone gave Jackson a second tree found at a yard sale. By 1998, he owned seven, when he said, "It was just too many trees to fit in my house".
For several years, ATOM appeared as a "Pop Up Museum" all around the region, garnering the attention of the press from Charlotte to Los Angles. In 2009, the newly established Transylvania Heritage Museum hosted Jackson's last Pop Up Event at 40 East Main Street in Brevard.
In 2010, the Transylvania Heritage Museum moved to 189 West Main Street. borrow a portion of Jackson's collection as part of a 1950s themed Holiday exhibit in 2014 and the trees were such a hit, museum began showing portions of Steven Jackson's Aluminum Tree Collection in 2014 and since then it has become a holiday tradition enjoyed by hundreds of visitors each year.
Over the years ATOM has became one of the most popular exhibits at the museum and the exhibit has been extended from just three weeks in December to eight weeks, opening in November and ending mid January.
Romanticasheville.com has said "Here's a fun, unique holiday outing that will make you smile and brighten your day. The Aluminum Tree & Ornament Museum (ATOM), the world's only museum dedicated to vintage aluminum Christmas trees."
